Pride Week

Hey everyone out there in blogger land!  Pride Week has been going great!!  Rene Hicks last night was just a blast!  She is HILARIOUS.  Tye-dying was great-I'm looking forward to seeing everyone around campus with their awesome new shirts!  And the discussion tonight was enlightening-We hear little snippets of what it's like to be out in the workplace every once in awhile, so it was good to hear narratives that professors and students had of their experiences.

The last event is tomorrow night-The Semi-Annual Drag Ball.  It's gonna be awesome!  Calvin has worked so hard on this event (as have all of the other EC members on their events-kudos to them) and I hope lots and lots and lots of people come.  It's Morehouse Ballroom 9pm.  $3 or $2 if you come in drag!!

I really started this post with other intentions and then realized that I'd not posted anything for Pride!  As soon as dear Trevs puts up some fotos on FB, i'll transfer them over to Flickr here.

So....

I was looking around at the LGBT-Friendly Campus Climate Index over there at Campus Pride and in the process of looking around found that snippet about Lavender Grad Ceremonies.  Honestly, I don't think there are enough of us queers graduating this year to have our own special ceremony, but it made me start thinking about having a little PARTAY!!  Perhaps at our final meeting, but either before or during finals week is probably not a good time.  I'm not sure.  Anyone out there have any thoughts?  Should Drake sponsor a Lavender Grad?

NYTimes Article

So promising that an article about trans is in the top 10 articles in the New York Times!

Thoughts on the article?

oh yeah, hope everyone had a safe St. Patrick's Day (we should think of the high incidence of alcohol abuse in the TLBG community) and that you enjoy Spring Break!

Healthier LGBT Relationships

I'm getting involved in reading a lot of the blogs at blogher.com.  Granted, there aren't that many bi or lesbian writers over there, but I did find this post after poking around looking for some good lesbian writers.

What do you all think?  Are GLBT people happier in relationships?  Do you think this is, as the author suggests, because of our willingness to break gender norms?  Or just that we CAN'T follow the gender norms because my partner is a woman and who will bring home the bread because neither one of us is the male...

I, for one, have a hard time reconciling this apparent fact with that that GLBT people are much more likely to be depressed and attempt suicide...  Perhaps when we are in relationships, it is easier to be happier with who we are because we know we are sharing that experience?

What do y'all think?

Updates!

Hey everyone!

Just a few updates for you all:
A few RU members went to Iowa Pride Network's Student Day at the Capitol on Wednesday.  We chatted with a number of different Iowa Representatives and Senators including those that represent the Drake area.  We were thanking them for all of their hard work over the past year on the Safe Schools Bill and the Non-Discrimination Bill.  It was a great day of learning about the political process and how easy it is to talk with your political representatives!

The next event that Iowa Pride Network is putting on is Gay-Straight Alliance Day on April 5th!  This event is bringing together GLBTQI high school and college students and their allies for a 1/2 day conference with free lunch and t-shirt provided!  Sign up: GSA Day.

Don't forget that on Wednesday (March 12th), we will be holding EC elections for the 2008-2009 Rainbow Union EC!  If you are interested, email rainbowunion@drake.edu to get more info.

Also on Wednesday, we will have two of the students that went to MBLGTACC present some of the awesome info they learned at the conference!  We will also take some time to talk about Lawrence King, read up on what happened here if you've not heard.

That's it for now.  Hope you all have a good week!
